Anker Hotel – Oslo

Starting my day right at the hotel’s restaurant was a treat. The breakfast spread offered a delightful variety of gluten and gluten-free options. I indulged in fresh fruit, yogurt, and an assortment of breads with gluten. The staff was incredibly accommodating ensuring that everything you need was provided for. They had a separate breakfast section for people with allergies, including gluten-free options as in yoghurt, blueberry biscuits and oat crackers plus some more. Though, I am not a celiac myself my sister is. That’s why I was also on the lookout for gluten-free options and the service they provide for people with dietary restrictions.

My Top Tips for Navigating Norway Gluten-Free as a Brother to a Sister with Celiac Disease.

My Oslo experience, with the Anker Hotel as my convenient launchpad, taught me a few things about eating gluten-free in Norway:

  1. Supermarkets are Superstars: Seriously, don't underestimate them. Chains like REMA 1000, Kiwi, Coop, and Meny have dedicated gluten-free sections. Stock up on bread, crackers, pasta, and snacks. Having a fridge in your room (if available) or just a good base like the Anker Hotel makes storing these a breeze.

  2. Learn the Lingo: "Uten gluten" (gluten-free) is your best friend. Also useful: "kan inneholde spor av gluten" (may contain traces of gluten). Most Norwegians speak excellent English, but knowing the key phrases always helps!

  3. Ask, Ask, Ask: Don't be shy! In cafes and restaurants, staff were generally knowledgeable and willing to help. It’s always worth asking about ingredients and cross-contamination procedures.

  4. Embrace Naturally GF: Norway has some wonderful naturally gluten-free dishes. Think fresh fish, potatoes, and delicious berries.

  5. Hotel Hospitality: It's always worth asking at your hotel about GF options. The team at the Anker Hotel were very approachable, and knowing you have a safe breakfast option or can get advice makes all the difference.
