Garrett Popcorn Shops – Chicago

I was in Chicago recently for a conference and received many food tips for the city. I did not expect popcorn to be on the list of recommendations, but it was. My colleague Juliana told me to try Garret Popcorn Shops and said it was good. When she mentioned to buy the Garrett Mix, which is a combination of their CaramelCrisp and CheeseCorn flavour, I couldn’t help myself to doubt whether it would be for me, but she told me to trust her. Of course I did.

The Garrett Mix is gluten free, so I decided to bring it with me to LA as a gluten free Chicago souvenir for Jilly. There are several shops throughout Chicago as the brand was founded there in 1949, but they have since branched out across the world. Nowadays you can find over fifty shops across the globe, including Singapore, Dubai, Thailand, and Japan.

I went to the store near Millenium Park. They had flavours like Cashew CaramelCrisp, Simply Salted, Buttery, and Pecan CaramelCrisp, but I stuck to the classic and asked for the Garrett Mix. It was $6,66 for the smallest bag, which is still a pretty good size.

The popcorn went with me to LA and when I tried them after hours of travelling, they still tasted good.  As you expect, the combination of caramel and cheese makes for a sweet and savoury flavour. It’s pretty addictive, so definitely worth a try if you come across a Garrett Popcorn shop!

On their own website they respond to the question whether Garret Popcorn is gluten free: “Our signature recipes do not contain gluten or wheat. However, we do cook limited time recipes that contain gluten. Please be advised our recipes are cooked in a kitchen that also handles wheat”. The store I went to had popcorn scoops for each separate flavour, so no cross contamination there but you have to decide for yourself!

Their signature mix!

Must try!
