Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

Important! The Gluten Safe logo doesn’t mean Gluten-free!

After a nap on the beach, my mother and I, were looking for a safe place to have a quick bite before going home. She looked up the website, find me gluten-free, my usual go to website to get information about the safety to eat at a restaurant for celiacs too.

Bubba Gump at Santa Monica used to have a separate gluten-free menu but they don’t have that anymore. They indicate the dishes with a gluten safe label which isn’t safe for celiacs! I would like to strongly point that out to everyone that gets intestinal damage or feels sick after eating gluten.

When you look at the menu at the second photo, you can see in bold red letters the dish, I had: Jenny’s Salmon & Shrimp with the GS label behind it. The herb butter and the lobster butter sauce both are made with wheat flour, so when you order this and tell in my case, a lovely waitress Brooke, who went three times to the kitchen to double check my options and to ensure my meal was safe for me to consume. The rice is combined with one of the butters as well but they were able to scoop a new batch of rice and combine it with regular butter! They told me the mashed potatoes were safe as well but I didn’t feel safe too eat it. I ate rice for several days in a row, therefore I ordered the mashed potatoes.

We had a very nice view, when the sun was about to disappear behind the ocean. The Shrimps were lovely! I would recommend to order a dish here with shrimps, you can’t go wrong with them of course when the name of the restaurant ends with Shrimp Co. I takes me back to the scene where Forrest Gump with his sailing boat is overloaded with shrimps! If I’m correct in media studies this goes by the name of diegetic brand extension. @Arnoud correct me if I’m wrong! :) I am wondering if this would be considered part of extended cinema as well.

To spend the afternoon at the beach, we conveniently parked at the Santa Monica Boulevard. This was a parking lot with a two hour parking time zone. We figured after two hours to move the car, since we decided to grab some dinner at the pier, to a different parking spot since at the pay station you do not enter your license plate but the number of the parking lot. It was a nice way to combine a beach day with a dinner afterwards at he famous Santa Monica Pier – route 66! Thanks at Brooke, our waitress, for taking care of us that night!

Safety rating: when you are a celiac or also can’t eat gluten, it isn’t the easiest option to dine but if you are into a grilled fish or steak you are able to have dinner here. Make very sure you note you can’t eat gluten! The Gluten Safe logo doesn’t mean Gluten-free!
