Hans im Glück – Amsterdam
Restaurant turns gluten-free for one week!
A burger restaurant that is normally not gluten free decided to transform their restaurant into a gluten free one for a whole week. The restaurant in question? Hans im Glück at Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam. Not something you see every day, so something worth checking out.
Hans im Glück is one of the biggest German restaurant chains. I didn’t know this and was purely drawn in by the signs outside mentioning their gluten free week. Coincidentally – or not – my server was German and there were several tables with German speaking people when I ate there. From 17 until 23 November 2025 their whole restaurant is 100% gluten free, only serving gluten free buns, salads, sides, dips, and even beer. They are transparent about how they do this. During this week no gluten-containing ingredients are used in the restaurant; they implement strictly separated work processes with dedicated toasters and clean working equipment; their fryer is filled with fresh frying oil and without gluten products; and they clean the restaurant thoroughly daily. They specifically mention that they want to avoid cross-contamination. Besides the gluten free menu, each table had a leaflet explaining what gluten free means (including an explanation of celiac disease – though it did not mention it being an autoimmune disease). Not only did it explain that their gluten free bread this week came from Munich based gluten free bakery echt jetzt, but also what the ingredients of the buns was. Pretty impressive.
I ordered their crispy and skin-on Golden Fries (€4,90) with their signature burger the Hans’ Classic (€12,50). It consisted of a gluten free bun, a burger patty, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and their Hans im Glück burger sauce. If you want to add sauce then you can pick one of the four free to use sauces that are on each table: fry sauce, barbecue sauce, orange mustard, and ketchup. Since they had it, I washed it all down with their “gluten free blond beer”, which turned out to be a bottle of the first gluten free IPA on the Dutch market called Jopen Hop Zij Met Ons (€7,50).
I am not a celiac, but I did double check if everything really was gluten free and asked if even the sauces were gluten free (which they were). I have eaten my fair share of gluten free meals in non-gluten free restaurants, and I can say that I feel safe to take a gluten free friend with me here. There are plans to introduce a similar gluten free week at Hans im Gluck restaurants in other cities, so keep an eye out for that.
